Another commission!  I am just coming at you from all angles these days.  The idea was a "fierce fashion family portrait" of sorts - very House of M.  The addition of grown-up Speed and Wiccan was a fun touch and I had a great time coming up with contemporary fashions for them to model.  The trick was trying (and maybe falling short) to create a likeness between the characters.  Obviously Mag, Quicksilver, and Speed all have that silvery hair.  But I wanted Wiccan to resemble his brother and mother and for all the characters to have callbacks to other characters.  I think I had the most fun with the twins and Wanda.  For some reason, the idea of turning her headpiece into a turban really appealed to me, and for Billy and Tommy I got to delve into very current young male fashion, which was a treat. Below is a picture of the piece in the sketching stage.  Not much to look at but I rarely post in progress work.  :)

I tried to keep Wanda front and center, as I love her character and feel she's so important within this family, but I wasn't happy with any composition with her there.  Keeping her to the side, fists clenched, lent itself to the tension between her and her obviously relaxed father.  What do you think?  Good decision?

(edit: Polaris was not included in the commissioner's request and was left out.  Just the way the cookie crumbles.)

I love this!!! Wanda is one of my favorite marvel characters. Everyone looks great & the body language subtly screams how messy they are as a family.

the turban makes sense considering wanda's ethnic history as a gypsy.

I think you forgot one of Magneto's kids. Polaris is his daughter and Wanda and Pietro's half-sister...what was your decision for not including her?

oh this is incredibly gorgeous. As for your question, I definitely think it made a lot more thematic sense to have Wanda to the side, given the tensions between everyone. And now that I think about it, if you were inclined to revisit this already gorgeous piece, maybe a way to incorporate Chthon as some sort of overarching presence would be incredible and underline the very subtle tension.

I really love this piece, but where's Lorna?

Great image but I miss Lorna and Luna too.

Great art, but it feels completely hollow to me without Lorna being there.

I understand that as it's a commission, you're obligated to what the person paying you wanted to see. However, Lorna's exclusion from the picture ruined it for me. I hope that next time you're commissioned to draw the Magnus family, the person who does so has enough respect for the Magnus family to include Polaris.

In fairness if it's a commission the person should be able to have whatever characters they want drawn. It has nothing to do with respecting a fictious family they can't be offended. They aren't real.

It would be cool though Kevin, if down the line you were to revisit this family and include the entire family including the five in this image, Polaris, Luna and maybe even Nocturne and/or Psionics.

It might be even more challenging. Magneto, Quicksilver and the boys as I understand it are quite similar looking. It would be difficult to keep the cohension with all the female characters and retain that related look when you mix in green hair, blue hair, blue skin and elven ears. Additionally mixing in futuristic style(with Psionics) and Inhuman fashion(with Luna) could be fun. I don't think I've see you draw a child yet either.

Anyway I thought it was a great image. I just missed the more neglected characters from the portrait.

Yet another very beautiful piece. I see a lot of the recent Tommy Hilfiger ad campaign shining through with the whole messy but together family portrait theme. Very cool.
